Toya Delazy’s NuHigh

Toya Delazy is based in London and thriving in the European music scene.

I’ve been following her career for years. I think I might have gotten my first writing gig because of a review I did of her debut album, Due Drop Deluxe. The funny story there is that I was playing it in the car before the interview. This bout of good luck brought about a tradition. To this day, before I take any big meetings, best believe, I drove there blasting Heart in my car.

That was a solid while ago to be fair and since then her sound has changed, along with her postal code. Here’s where Delazy is at now.

  1. So, you’ve just released NuHigh, does the album have a name yet?
Nope, I’m playing with a few ideas, but I haven’t made up my mind.
  2. What was the inspiration behind NuHigh?
The beauty of South Africa showing my trajectory, from being young in Africa and moving overseas, and the embrace I have received from another land.
  3. Where’s your head at these days?
Working on my African tour and my album. I’m not the type that wants to be heard just to be heard. I need to have something I want to talk about — an experience that moves me emotionally. I’ve got that now and I’m putting it together into an awesome album.
  4. When are you touring Africa?
From September. There are 24 dates and 9 countries in Africa on the list. Check my social media platforms and website for the announcement!
  5. What emoji do you use most?
    🙂
  6. What’s been a highlight about being based in London?
The diversity and not having to explain to anyone why I am the way I am, as well as having the artistic freedom to express myself and grow as a performing artist.
  7. When was the last time you splatter laughed/cackled?
LOL! Both — when I saw this clip.
  8. If you could be an animal, what would you pick and why?
A dog in a 1st world country, they can live better than people from 3rd world countries, pampering, hotels etc. Dogs have a great life!
  9. What’s the best piece of advice you’vebeen given?
Focus more on what is working out than what isn’t. Prioritise your vision and dreams — pick your lane and don’t look around, unless you are overtaking.
  10. Where are you travelling to next?
After the African tour I may head to the United States to meet and hang with some people that want to be part of my musical and fashion journey.
  11. What do you know now that you didn’t know a year ago?
I need space from the industry to write. It’s easy to think you need to conform while others are doing well, but instead there must be strength in your silence. You should be sculpting yourself — taking time for yourself.
